Exploring the Impact of Weather on Outdoor Recess and its Effects on Children: A Scoping Review
Abstract
Outdoor recess is a crucial part of the school day that provides students with opportunities to be active, connect with nature, and play. Certain weather events may impact activities during outdoor recess, or in more extreme circumstances, outdoor recess might be moved inside. The purpose of this scoping review is to explore the impact of weather on outdoor recess and outcomes that are related to children's well-being. Searches were executed in six databases. In total, 15 articles were retrieved. Findings indicate that physical activity is the most studied outcome, and certain weather conditions impact other variables related to children's health or well-being during recess. Future research is needed to understand the impact of weather on other health and well-being related factors.
